I had such a cool birthday yesterday! Mostly because i got in touch with mr James, a Ghanian Fairtrade pineapple producer of. We spent some hours discussion the problems and obsticles that he as a 'Fair' producer face. Worth mentioning is the fact that some european importers of organic and Fairtrade fruits chooses to 'only' buy and sell the actual organic & Fairtrade pineapple as organic which means that the producer looses out on several levels.
If the pineapple would have been sold under a Fairtrade contract the producers would have the right to a longtime agreement and a minimum price above the worldmarket and productionprice, which a producer is not guaranteed if the product is only bought as 'organic'. This puts alot more pressure on the producers.
The meeting also included me getting the possibility of attending a conference for all Ghanas Fairtrade certified producers, the focus will be on (exactly why i came to Ghana!) the implementation of the social premium! More info next week!
The rest of the day was spent with some friends on a beachrestaurant, dressed in a cool pinkpatterned ghanian dress and dancin under the stars to reggea!
Thats all for now! Emilie
